Top Ten Reasons Religion is Like Pornography

Top Ten Reasons Religion is Like Pornography

  1. It has been practiced for all of human history, in all cultures
  2. It exploits perfectly natural, even commendable, impulses
  3. Its virtues are debatable, its proponents fanatical
  4. People love it, but can't give a rational reason for it
  5. Objectifies and degrades women even when it worships them
  6. You want to wash up after shaking hands with any of its leaders
  7. The costumes are outrageous, the performances silly, the plots unbelievable
  8. There's nothing wrong with enjoying it, but it's nothing to be proud of, either
  9. It is not a sound basis for public policy, government, or international relations
  10. Its stars are totally fake

how offensive. So many religions in the world, and you compare all of them to pornography. Real nice.
Wanna sit down with the Dalai lama and tell him your nifty little list?
How about giving this list to a Christian friend of yours? You know, the one who gives toys to needy kids at christmas and delivers food baskets to the poor on Thanksgiving? They need to know how their religion is like porno. Yup. Go forth and educate.

simply: sense of humor is not on the top ten list so, um, guess not!

nor, it seems is accuracy - the people I seem to have heard talking about volunteering and such are largely the feminists - you know, the ones who foolishly think they can make the world better by helping people building comunity etc rather than getting on their knees and mumbling. sure not all feminists are paragons and not all christians are godbags, but if you're after people who are willing to make a difference, it's easy to see who some of them are.

Because of my family background, I've spent most of my life around deeply religious people. Even today, most of my friends and family members are religious.

And I can tell you without reservation that just about every religious person I've ever known would have laughed out loud at that list.

I can tell you from experience that deeply religious people tend to have a good sense of humor when it comes to religion. That's because truly religious people are secure in their beliefs, and that keeps them from being oversensitive.
